Ooops.. MY CHILD LOVES TO SCRIBBLE ON WALLS! - Help!
- Advice from Prof Dr Rozieta Shaary – Asian #1 Parent Expert and Coach
A number of children love drawing on paper or books. However, there are selected few who do not find satisfaction from just drawing on paper, they just cannot resist scribbling on walls. Even though we have given them lots of papers, they still desire to scribble on walls. It's as though they can only find satisfaction after marking the walls with their 'masterpieces'.
When I was in England with my young children, social workers would come and visit from time to time. They always gave valuable tips and suggestions on how to raise a child. One of the tips they shared was how to control a child who loves to draw on walls.
They shared that it was very important not to stop these children from scribbling on walls as they are in deep self reflection. Usually, children who are highly visual and artistic love to do this. This is usually temporary and a phase of their motorskills development. What you can do is to paste large pieces of paper on your walls and allow him to draw, scribble and doodle all he wants. You'll just need to replace the paper when it's full. Remember, this is only a short temporary phase. If you prohibit it totally, your child will feel dissatisfied and will harbour some form of resentment in his heart.
This is a photo of my eldest grandchild. Her mother is smart to harness her child's self-believe and self-esteem. This is just a temporary phase and would last between 3-4 months. Now this sweet little girl loves to paint on paper!
